Abstract:
The Forestry Sector is perceived as a male dominated institution in terms of decision making, task allocation and access to opportunity for enhanced performance and capabilities. An Investigation Report was under taken from February to May 2008 with the main aim of identifying the Role of Performance Management administered on Women by their respective Managers at RMSC. The Resource Management Support Centre (RMSC) was selected as the study area for the research. The research identified the following as performance management techniques administered on women by managers at RMSC: • In-house seminars • On-the-job training • Coaching, counseling and guidance • Performance Appraisal Review Meetings • Internal briefing • Job deputation • Delegated tasks and Mentoring.Out of the numerical strength of one hundred and eleven ( 111) staff of RMSC, a stratified method was used to select twenty-five (25) members of staff from five (5) identified different sectional categories to form the target group for the research. The research specifically assessed women's performance on assigned duties and factors that contribute to the effective performance of women at RMSC. There were no clearly separated jobs allocated" to women at RMSC, thus; women perform effectively on assigned tasks with male counterparts in similar set targets. It was revealed through Staff Distribution by Gender in the sectional categories at RMSC that, RMSC is a male dominated center with ninety-nine (99) staff as males and only twelve(12) females representing 89% and 11 % respectively; with only two women in the Professional grade involved in managerial decision processes. This call for the creation of women' s desk at the Forestry Commission to address women's concerns including recruitment, involvement in decision making and promotion. The research concluded in an analogy that, the performance management inputs invested in staff proportionately reflects in their outputs in delivery.
