Authors: ADU-ASEM ASIEDU, PERPETUAL HILDA
Abstract: The rural-urban disparity displays some form of economic and income inequalities. This is predominantly due to the increasing perception of the employment opportunities available in urban areas. This however appears to be the main driving force behind rural-urban migration. Hence, the urban space is constantly faced with numerous physical and socio economic challenges as a result of population influx making it a dreadful abode for survival.
The condition heightens as rural enthusiasts migrate to the city for economic gains. Unfortunately, they are rather faced with the social mishaps of a growing urban competition full of risks and dangers.
Premised on this, the case study approach was used in this study since an investigation of a current issue within its real life content (street hawking in Kumasi) will disclose the factors resulting in street hawking dangers and risks.
Findings indicated that street hawkers suffer various risks and dangers which unfortunately, city authorities seem to be unconcerned. In most cases they are more defenseless than the other segments of the urban economy due to insecurity and the physical threats on their lives. Authorities must therefore seek to reduce the impact of street dangers.
It was realized that over 50% of street hawkers continue to stay on the streets because they have no alternative economic activity to engage in. Again, the formal urban market with its competition makes it difficult for these informal dwellers to survive economically.
It was recommended that street hawking areas must be integrated in urban planning schemes such as a dedicated trading site which will ensure that activities will be accommodated adequately in the urban spatial environment.
This study thus suggests that street hawking has become a dangerous and risky venture although its location is very important to the hawkers and their operations require such a location that could help reconcile urban traffic management and a coherent planning system.

Abstract: Poverty is a common social issue throughout the world and as such several social intervention policies (educational, health and employment) have been implemented worldwide to help reduce or eradicate poverty. Unfortunately, these intervention policies seem not to be making the desired impact; hence, the need to assess and make necessary recommendations to improve and make them more effective and efficient. One of such interventions is the Ghana School Feeding Programme which has the aims of encouraging basic school pupils to attend school regularly, reduce the burden on their parents, and provide employment (caterers) and enable local farmers get ready market for their farm produce. Due to some challenges, the programme is failing to achieve its goal and objectives. The Atwima Kwanwoma District has majority of its settlements being rural and peri-urban and has suffered poverty over the years and continues to do so. The objectives of this study were to determine the percentage of the targeted population benefiting from the programme and identify the major challenges of the programme in the district.
Data for the study was collected through the administration of questionnaires. The data gathered was electronically analyzed. From the results of the analysis, it was found out that the total of beneficiaries are 18,086 of which 55% have benefited from the programme in different ways whiles 45% have not benefited in any way. The major challenges of the programme are political interference, poor monitoring and evaluation and misuse of resources by some caterers and their employees leading to shortages in some schools.
Therefore, to these challenges, suitable recommendations were made to improve the programme so that it will help reduce poverty in the district. They include; developing policies to limit the power of politicians with regards to the school feeding programme, monitoring of the programme regularly as it will keep the officials and caterers on their feet doing the right thing at all times, rewards and severe punishments should be given to all those who are caught doing things that will negatively affect the programme and impede its success and plans should be made by the district and the MOFA to assist farmers (financially or technically) to enable them perform their role towards the success of the programme by achieving food security within the district and nation.

Title: A STUDY OF POLICE PERSONNEL’S ACCOMMODATION AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CRIME FIGHTING IN THE SUAME DIVISION OF THE GHANA POLICE SERVICE IN THE KUMASI METROPOLITAN ASSEMBLY AREA
Authors: DZIWORNU KUDALOR, PROSPER,ERNEST ADDAI
Abstract: Maintenance of internal security in Ghana is the main responsibility of the Police Service. It has been emphasized by several scholars that the environment within which the Police operates is of great concern to civil society. It was based on this rationale that a study was conducted. The accommodation policy of the Ghana Police Service and Crime were reviewed. Close and open ended questionnaires were used to collect data for the study. A total of 183 Police personnel were interviewed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to generate tables, percentages and cross tabulations. Data collected were presented and discussed both qualitatively and qualitatively. Findings from the study revealed that 53% of the Police personnel have been provided with accommodation in barracks and rented quarters. However, out of the total number of personnel provided with accommodation, 31.7% of the personnel live in Police accommodation within the Suame Division. It was again found out that, recruitment and transfer of personnel do not correlate with provision of Police accommodation. The findings of the study revealed that, 46.9% of Police personnel live outside the Suame Division. These Police officers travel an average distance of 12.96 km before getting to their places of work which affect their duties negatively. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: i) government should give approval for the Police Administration to enter into Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement to help address the accommodation challenges facing the Police Service in Suame Division. Secondly, the Police Administration should use police acquired lands as equity to obtain private financing to develop residential facilities.
